Gen Y and increasingly many of us in Gen X won't work for images - they will work for authentic and 'real' people.

Things have been busy on other sites. With the launch of my personal business site, the Noble Souls site and the work being going on at Rebel Island things are progressing.

As far as the book is concerned it has been gestating- that’s probably the best way to put it. I think I’ve found the basic anchor to it now and can proceed again with my thoughts and ideas in this space.

Fundamentally the idea of the Rebel in a Business Suit is about reaching into and re-emerging with your true self. The Oracle at Dephi in ancient Greece spoke about ‘knowing theyself’ so that the idea of being a rebel in a business suit is the journey from ‘mask to core’ - from what we ‘project’ to what we ‘radiate’ out (or do not let radiate out). A Rebel in a Business Suit is someone who has decided that they’re fed up with all the image and other people’s rules and want to get real with their life and work and themselves.

Whether that’s about changing their careers, making more time for themselves, for their families or friendships or getting to their spiritual source and starting to live those values within the world - then that’s the rebellion, the casting off of chains that have prevented our light shining.

Gen Y and increasingly many of us in Gen X won’t work for images - they will work for authentic and ‘real’ people.

What is becoming clearer is that Generation X are indeed the ‘bridge’ generation between the ‘Baby Boomers’ and Gen Y and much work is being done in this area as we truly live in a r’evolutionary age.

I’ve met recently with firms such as Common Purpose and E3Unlimited both of whom are focused on the new world of work and on the Generation Y space and we are coming together to collaborate on creating an educational event for the Baby Boomers, those of us in Gen X who still don’t get it and their offspring in Gen Y.

Woth checking out their sites and seeing what is here and now. The r’evolution grows.

I’m conscious that it’s been a while since I posted some new material on the chapters so I have put two more chapters up for your edification recently. I’m not focusing on them being ‘just right’, ‘just yet’, but comments are welcome.

This book is becoming an exploration in thought and I suspect that I’m going to have to bounce this around a little more before it tweaks itself into position.

Ever start something in a blaze of glory and then wonder ‘why?’ - it’s not that I’m struggling with the concept - it’s just about how is all going to come together seamlessly. But then, maybe being r’evolutionary means it doesn’t have to - its all about the provocation, the passion and then the purpose.

I had a meeting this week with a literary agent in London with a view to help with getting the book published eventually. Always useful to get third-party feedback on one’s ideas. While I’m not a big fan of the publisher route - having had a bad experience the first time - I had been looking at web self-publishing the book.

However, the idea of someone working with me to keep me focused and to look at other ways to use the IP around the book would be of great help. Trying to make the time to write is still problematic what with the demands of the practice but doing my best. I have had quite a few articles published in the press around the topic which <a href="http://www.seanweafer.com/media/"title="Media Links" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker ('/outbound/article/www.seanweafer.com');">can be viewed here so I am making head way.

Next challenge is to get the completed R’Evolutionary Selling audio programme series finished, review the chapters written to date and put them up on the site and re-design the primary site www.SeanWeafer.com

I’ve been asked what is the difference between leadership and selling. How are they different? The reality is that, in my view, they are not.

I was interested to learn once that the word for selling derives from a Scandinavian word - ’selje’. This word is meant to mean service. Selling therefore is about ’service’ and how well we do is determined by how well we serve our clients.

For me the leaders of the new age must also serve - they serve our internal customers - our personnel. They must be able to sell the message of the business and it’s vision and quest in order to get the willing co-operation and involvement of their teams.
As a child, my father once told me that ‘a leader never asks someone to do something that they are not willing to do themselves’. The old age of command an control is over.

Both sales and leadership professionals require a huge degree of skill in connecting, involving and engaging with people. The idea of viewing communications training as a ’soft skill’ is antiquated and out of date and voiced now only by those who are being left behind as the people and the organisation changes around them.

Both sales and leadership professionals also need to inspire their ‘clients’ - they must raise the energy within them that encourages people to committ to a course of action.

Service and inspiration. Leadership and selling.

So far so good - the book is continuing apace. Only about 3 chapters left to write now and we’ll be all set. Of course, there is extensive revision to be done on what is there at present but we are working according to plan and should make the April deadline that I’ve set myself.

After revision of the existing chapters I will be placing them on the site within the next week.

Next conversations with literary agents. Originally I wanted to look at publishing the book myself but on reflection (and advice) I have decided I should at least see if there are agents who would like to discuss the project and who can bring their unique skills to bear.

My last book (The Business Coaching revolution 2001) taught me a lot about how the publishing business works and the things one can expect (and not…) from a publishing house. A good agent might make things a little smoother this time.

A good description of one of the traits of the new rebels.

The new rebels may not always have been seen as “rebels” either. They didn’t join Amnesty International or have a picture of Che Guevara on their student walls. They may not have been seen as radical or risk-takers. Maybe a little strange – but not radical!

You see, they didn’t fit into the usual rebel image either. They are their own people and walk their own way. That’s always been their rebellion. They may have had a foot in many camps as they grew – fitting in, being accepted but never fully a part of the scene – they were seeking their true selves.

Over their lifetime they matured and evolved into the new rebels for the new age and they are continuing to evolve, their numbers growing. That is what makes them powerful.

Rebels understand the value and power of balance – understanding that balance is never static – it is always dynamic and that everything is a question of the odds, that life is never certain. Rebels walk the edge of change. They understand that risk is an important part of reward and they like rewards.

They appreciate that there is a little bit of good in the worst of us and a little bit of evil in the best of us and that life is enriched by such extremes. Sometimes they’ll argue or do the opposite of something they agree with just to get another perspective. Sometimes they see the value of the stick as well as the carrot.

Rebels know that in the development of themselves and the accomplishment of worthwhile change, there is a dark side as well as a light.

It is not something they run away from but something they come to embrace as much as that of the light. As “Edge Walkers” their appreciation of this duality of things gives them a unique perspective on the world.

They don’t always follow the rules and will happily break them if they consider them to be too restrictive. Rebels in business suits value order but they will not accept constraint.

Today, rebels are the ultimate “Edge Walkers” as they straddle the change of Ages with a foot in both worlds – the old age and the new, the material and the personal.

Rebels are not afraid to take on responsibility.

They understand that this may mean additional challenges, more work and effort, it might upset a comfortable position they may have and it might mean that they stand out from others and attract unwanted or unpleasant attention - but they do it anyway.

They understand that someone has to step forward to do the ‘tough stuff’, at some point someone has to lead the way. However they don’t do it just for praise or recognition or even power - although they may come when they are successful - they do it because they realise an important thing about responsibility - it is done out of love and a desire to be of service to others.

Rebels will not act out of ‘duty’ - they understand that too often ‘duty’ is used to co-erce people into doing things they would rather not do - and therefore they end doing it without commitment or desire. They are not engaged with the work or the task.

Rebels understand a simple principle of leadership - never to ask someone to do something that one is not willing to do oneself. Therefore they will always seek clarity because they understand that to be succesful a person needs to know clearly ‘what’ needs doing and ‘why’ it is of direct value to the person expected to do it.

Rebels lead by being an example, by being willing to be the first to ’step up’ when needed and never to give into their fears.

R-Evolutionaries are compelling people. They are compelling because they are driven by their vision - by passion and purpose.

They are enthused with the venture that they have undertaken, they are committed to its successful outcome and they are clear about the benefits and value that it’s success will bring for them and to the people around them.

Because they believe so passionately and have such a clear vision - they are very congruent and very convincing in their communication and how they sell that vision to others. Their conviction shines from them lending them a powerful and persuasive charisma.

R-Evolutionaries instinctively tap into two very elemental values - service and love. They love what they do and they do it in the service of others.

It seems to me that the world is driven by the least of expectations - by LCD - Lowest Common Denominator. I’m not talking about the need to make things accessible to people who might be disabled in some way - in fact, they are the people who will never settle for less than the best that they can be. I’m talking about the general consensus in the working population that ‘OK’ will do.

‘OK’ service, ‘OK’ committment, ‘OK’ quality. If you’re a rebel - committed to taking change to the next level - then ‘OK” definitely will not do. As R-evolutionaries we are committed to creating a world that is better, even more than what it is now. That change has already started within us and every day in all kinds of ways we bring it manifested into the world - despite the lethargy and outright resistance of others.

How could we not? For we are committed to a personal vision, a personal vocation. The ‘rebel in a business suit’ is driven by something greater than just ‘the suits’.

We are driven by the need to ‘give’ service - others are driven only by being ‘in’ service.

Rebels are committed to HCD - Highest Common Denominator. It is of us that a fellow Irishman George Bernard Shaw might have written:

‘Most men see the world and wonder why? Whereas I see a world that has never been and say why not?’
